With the exception of the Wednesday of Vacation Bible School (VBS) week (VBS is typically held the third full week of July at Trinity Church), each Wednesday for 10 weeks in the summer months, the church building is filled with the noise of children learning the First Catechism or Catechism for Young Children.
Wonderful Wednesday meets from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM.
The purpose of these weekly sessions is to assist parents in instructing the truths of God's Word to their children. On Wonderful Wednesdays, we do this through Bible lessons designed to teach the catechism, singing catechism related songs, and question and answer games that make the learning fun. And, lest I forget, there's also recreation and snack (donut balls or mini-donuts and healthy snacks and milk!) It is hoped that we will continue to have children prepared to recite all of the answers to all 145 (or 150 depending on the version of the catechism) to the pastor without error in one sitting.
Those who do so will have their names placed on a plaque that will be displayed in the church building, and they will be acknowledged in our denomination's Equip for Ministry quarterly publication. They are also recognized during a special ceremony before worship one Sunday morning.
So, parents, don't stop going over the catechism with your children - keep it up year-round! It CAN be done! We look forward to how God uses this ministry to help mold covenant children into well-equipped and well-versed churchmen and women when they grow up!!
